New Balance Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the FuelCell Play Hook & Loop runs true to size for most children. New Balance typically maintains consistent sizing across their playground shoe line, so we recommend ordering your child's regular shoe size. If your child has wider feet, you may want to consider sizing up by half a size, as the shoe has a standard width fit.

The FuelCell Play Hook & Loop requires minimal break-in time thanks to its flexible, cushioned FuelCell midsole and soft upper materials. Most children can wear them comfortably right out of the box, making them ideal for active play from day one. The stretchy bungee laces combined with the hook-and-loop strap ensure a customized fit without the need for adjustment periods.

Absolutely—the FuelCell Play Hook & Loop is specifically designed for playground and active play environments. The FuelCell midsole foam delivers a propulsive feel that helps drive forward motion, making it excellent for running, jumping, and dynamic movement on the playground. The Toe Protect technology adds an extra layer of safety during these high-impact activities.

Toe Protect is New Balance's reinforced toe cap design that shields your child's feet from rocks, roots, debris, and other hazards commonly found on playgrounds and outdoor surfaces. This feature extends the shoe's durability while keeping little feet safer during adventurous play. It's especially valuable for children who tend to drag their toes or play in rugged outdoor environments.

Simply wipe down the shoe with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris from the upper and midsole. For deeper cleaning, use a soft brush with mild soap and water, then air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Avoid machine washing or submerging the shoe, as this can damage the FuelCell midsole and hook-and-loop closure.

Yes, the hook-and-loop top strap on the FuelCell Play Hook & Loop provides an extra secure fit that's ideal for active children. Combined with the stretchy bungee laces, this dual-closure system keeps the shoe locked in place during running, jumping, and playground activities. The hook-and-loop design also makes it easy for children to put on and take off independently.

The FuelCell midsole foam in the New Balance FuelCell Play Hook & Loop is engineered to be more responsive and propulsive than standard EVA foam, giving kids a bouncy, energetic feel with each step. This technology helps propel forward motion, making it feel less like a heavy playground shoe and more like an active performance shoe. The cushioning also provides excellent impact protection for daily wear and play.

The FuelCell Play Hook & Loop is built to withstand the demands of active playground use with reinforced Toe Protect technology and a durable rubber outsole. The FuelCell midsole is designed to maintain its cushioning and responsiveness through extended wear. While all shoes eventually show wear, this model is specifically engineered for the rough-and-tumble nature of playground environments.

The FuelCell Play Hook & Loop is available in standard width sizing. If your child has wider feet, New Balance offers other models in their playground collection with wide-width options, or you can size up by half a size in this model for additional room. We recommend checking the specific size chart for your child's measurements to ensure the best fit.

The New Balance FuelCell Play Hook & Loop comes in multiple colorway options to suit different style preferences, including classic neutral tones and vibrant accent colors. Availability of specific colorways may vary by size and region, so we recommend checking the product listings to see current options. New Balance regularly updates their color selections, so checking back periodically may reveal new styles.
